Westend

The Westend (official writing in German; English translation: West End) is a district of Frankfurt and is one of the preferred residential areas. The Westend is considered a district with bourgeois, well-off residents, and above-average real estate prices. Together with the Bahnhofsviertel and the districts of Nordend and Ostend, both parts of the city consist of highly dense historic districts of Frankfurt inner city areas.

Together with the Bockenheim district, the Westend forms the district of Frankfurt-Innerstadt II. The population was around 29,000 in 2022. For statistical purposes, the Westend is divided into the areas of Westend-Süd (South) and Westend-Nord (North), but is generally viewed as a unit. The border between the two areas is mainly formed by the Grüneburgweg.

In the 1950s, the Westend was still a purely residential area for around 40,000 people with historic buildings. At that time, houses usually only had four floors. The Westend is still characterized by partly upper-class Wilhelminian architecture, which makes it one of the most expensive residential areas in Frankfurt. However, the 1950s residential buildings and office buildings from the 1970s cannot be overlooked, with the latter in particular being erected without regard to the surrounding buildings.

Despite the high population density and the good transport infrastructure, the Westend has no hospitals, fire stations, or police stations. However, all emergency facilities are available in the adjacent Nordend.

High-rise buildings were built in the Westend in particular in the 1970s and 1980s. These include numerous skyscrapers in the Financial District along Mainzer Landstrasse.
