The Green Corridors Network
Green corridors are continuous natural or landscaped pathways that connect parks, gardens, natural habitats, and urban areas. They provide important routes for people to walk, cycle, and enjoy outdoor activities while also supporting wildlife movement and ecological connectivity. By increasing vegetation and green space within urban areas, green corridors help reduce air pollution, lower temperatures caused by the urban heat island effect, and improve overall environmental quality. These corridors play a vital role in creating healthier, more liveable cities by bringing nature closer to residents and linking different parts of the city in an environmentally friendly way.
Recognizing these benefits, Dubai’s 2040 Urban Master Plan places significant emphasis on developing a comprehensive network of green corridors across the metropolitan area. The plan aims to double the existing open space in Dubai by linking major parks, natural areas, and urban centres through continuous green pathways. This system will form a key part of Dubai’s soft mobility network, encouraging people to choose walking or cycling instead of driving for short trips.
Beyond promoting healthier lifestyles, these green corridors will also help improve the city’s environmental resilience. By introducing greenery in areas affected by intense urban heat, they will help cool the city naturally, reducing the need for energy-intensive air conditioning. The corridors will also support biodiversity by providing wildlife corridors and connecting fragmented habitats, which is crucial for maintaining ecological balance in a rapidly growing city.
Furthermore, the plan prioritizes enhancing public access to Dubai’s waterfront by linking existing beaches and undeveloped coastal areas with green corridors. This will ensure that residents and visitors can easily reach the city’s natural coastal assets, promoting recreation and wellbeing while safeguarding open space along the shoreline.
